Summary

This jewel-like memoir by noted herbalist and traveler Juliette de Bairacli Levy details her personal struggle against typhus fever, during which she gave birth to her second child, Luz, who had to be suckled by a nanny goat。  As ever we are embraced by Juliette’s love of nature and animals, and welcomed onlookers as she relates with people whose lives are far different from ours。

Gypsies dance and sing their way through this book, adding their picturesque – and sometime threatening – energy to an exquisitely detailed story that is always intriguing, and sometimes suspenseful。

Juliette shares with us the herbal lore she learned and used in the Spanish Sierra Nevada mountains。  You’ll find herbs to combat vermin, counter burns, keep your skin beautiful, and many more。

It was wonderful to hear Juliette's voice again through her writing。 She doesn't really romanticize her wild kind of living。 She doesn't shrink in writing about details of flies covering everything, of almost dying of typhus, of the "mongering" gypsies。 But she sees beyond that and celebrates the the sound of the goats being driven through the village, and the wheat rustling against the outer wall of the water mill。 She glories in the beauty of the mountain flowers, the stirring gypsy music, the It was wonderful to hear Juliette's voice again through her writing。 She doesn't really romanticize her wild kind of living。 She doesn't shrink in writing about details of flies covering everything, of almost dying of typhus, of the "mongering" gypsies。 But she sees beyond that and celebrates the the sound of the goats being driven through the village, and the wheat rustling against the outer wall of the water mill。 She glories in the beauty of the mountain flowers, the stirring gypsy music, the healing sunshine, the scent of rosemary and the wonders of her children。 。。。more

Juliette De Bairacli Levy wrote over and over of her life in primitive surroundings。 In the Sierra Nevada of southern Spain, she lived in a water mill at the time of the birth of Luz。 Neither she nor her children escaped the typhus which was endemic to the area, but in the end she "felt mostly thankfulness for what I had seen and learned there: my love for Spain, my belief in herbs, all strengthened by my experience on the mountain。" Her writing is full of the beauty of the flowers, the animals Juliette De Bairacli Levy wrote over and over of her life in primitive surroundings。 In the Sierra Nevada of southern Spain, she lived in a water mill at the time of the birth of Luz。 Neither she nor her children escaped the typhus which was endemic to the area, but in the end she "felt mostly thankfulness for what I had seen and learned there: my love for Spain, my belief in herbs, all strengthened by my experience on the mountain。" Her writing is full of the beauty of the flowers, the animals and people of the area。Juliette's distinctive voice can be heard throughout the book。 For those of us who wondered, it also clears up the question of her husband, the father of her children。 Francisco Lancha Dominguez, a journalist who was working in Spanish Morocco。 He comes to see her and help when the typhus is at its worst。 But he does not think she should have come to this wild place。 "He could never belong to the country life, and I, likewise, could not belong to the town。 We warred much concerning this。 He thought that it was madness on my part to choose to be alone in an old mill in Spain for the birth of our second child, and not with him in Tetuan。" 。。。more
